  • The first rechargeable battery

    Between 1832-1839 the first electric carriage (or automobile as we know it today) was developed through the work of Scot Robert Anderson. Shortly thereafter, Thomas Davenport and Robert Davidson perfected the concept.

    The invention of the rechargeable battery managed to eliminate the problem of the first batteries, which when depleted were considered useless.

    Until that year, all batteries were permanently emptied when they were depleted. But then Gaston Planté, a French scientist, invented the lead acid battery, the first accumulator, or what otherwise became to be known as the first rechargeable battery.

  • First prototypes

    In 1900 was produced the first hybrid automobile prototypes. In the United States the Batton Motor Vehicle Corporation developed a hybrid truck that used the L. Epstein patent, but it’s not known if any company made progress on this model afterwards.

    In 1900 the first hybrid bus was introduced in the same country by Fischer. Unfortunately, at that time, it was very expensive and very difficult to store electricity.

    This was considered the world’s first production hybrid car and the first front wheel drive automobile. It had a cruising range of 64 kilometers (40 miles) by only using the electrical energy stored in the batteries. The model had no mechanical connection between the combustion engine and the wheels, so it did not require a transmission or clutch.   • First luxury hybrid: the RX400h

    On its commitment to perfection, Lexus entered the US market in 1987, perfecting its hybrid technology over the years to the creation of the Lexus Hybrid Drive, one of the most powerful and efficient systems.

    Lexus became the leader of luxury hybrids and it is dedicated to developing vehicles with the highest standards in performance and comfort.

    These Lexus models incorporated dynamic and outstanding features that facilitate the driving of vehicles, thus giving a new language to hybrid cars, which until then were not considered to be able to become luxury cars.

    That is how Lexus was the first vehicle manufacturer to make a world-class luxury hybrid, with its launch in 1998: the RX400h. Subsequently, the off-road vehicle, the RX450h, brings even more speed with an acceleration of 0-60 mph (0-96 kph) in 7.0 seconds, something unthinkable years ago. This thanks to the use of three electric motors to propel the vehicle, providing an impressive acceleration in a luxurious and comfortable car.

  • What’s a hybrid automobile?

    Let’s start by defining what a hybrid vehicle is: A hybrid vehicle is any type of vehicle that has two sources of energy. These can include sailboats (wind / engine) or a locomotive (diesel / electric). In the case of an automobile, a hybrid is one that combines an internal combustion engine and an electric motor which can be powered by a hybrid battery pack. Many the hybrids have gasoline engines, with an regenerative energy system, which makes them the most efficient cars in the world.

    They have been a reality for many years and have gradually begun to become popular thanks to the oil crisis, the rising cost of fossil fuels, cheaper technology and greater environmental awareness. There are a number of myths that discourage many people to consider this great driving option, but fortunately most of these misconceptions disappear as soon as you enter a hybrid. They are not a definitive solution, but they are an excellent alternative to improve the current conditions in the short to mid-term, thanks to the great contribution that their efficient systems make of alternative energies.

Classification

Hybrids typically do not have to connect to an external electrical connection, thanks its self-sufficient electric system.

Hybrids can be classified into three types based on their configuration:


You also have hybrids that can be plugged which allows their batteries to be charged externally, such as a Plug-in Hybrid or PHEV: A hybrid belongs in this group if its batteries can be recharged by external means, such as connecting it to a power outlet, and usually can travel in electric-only mode for 32 kilometers (20 miles) without the need for the gasoline engine or another charge.
